Czechs’ ‘Gift for Putin’ Campaign Funds $2.9M Black Hawk for Ukraine
The Czech Republic’s “A Gift for Putin” initiative, despite its misleading name, has emerged as a powerful act of solidarity with Ukraine. Launched in November 2023, this volunteer-driven campaign has raised an impressive 72.3 million Koruna ($2.9 million) from over 20,500 donors, all dedicated to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The funds will be used to purchase a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, a crucial asset for Ukraine’s war effort. While Ukraine has received drones, ammunition, and armored vehicles from various sources, helicopters remain a critical need for specialized operations. The Black Hawk, known for its versatility, will play a vital role in troop transport, casualty evacuation, and other military missions.
Expected to be delivered later this month, the helicopter will be operated by Ukraine’s military intelligence unit. The initiative’s organizers emphasized that Ukraine cannot win the war with limited resources alone—it needs advanced equipment like helicopters to sustain its fight against Russia.
The UH-60 Black Hawk, with its high-speed capabilities and ability to transport troops and supplies even in high-risk environments, will provide Ukraine with a strategic edge. The campaign’s statement, urging supporters to “finish what we started together and send Chestmir (the Black Hawk) to fight against the dark Empire,” underscores the determination of Czech citizens to make a tangible impact.
With this initiative, the Czech Republic becomes the first country where ordinary citizens have come together to crowdfund an advanced military helicopter for Ukraine. It serves as a powerful example of grassroots support translating into real-world military aid, proving that even in war, the will of the people can make a difference.
