Turkey to Build Aircraft Carrier and Four Frigates
Defense News ,Turkey :- Turkey has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance its naval capabilities, signaling a strategic move to bolster Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri (Turkish Navy). The decision to construct a new aircraft carrier and four additional frigates was solidified during a meeting of the Turkish defense industry executive committee in Ankara, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The forthcoming aircraft carrier, designed to surpass the capabilities of the existing TCG Anadolu (L-400), represents a significant leap forward in Turkey naval expansion. However, the carrier full potential, particularly its air group, remains uncertain due to Turkey challenges in procuring F-35B jets from the United States.
In addition to the aircraft carrier, the committee confirmed the development of four Istif-class frigates, an extension of the MİLGEM project. These vessels, numbered 9 through 12 for the Turkish navy, will follow in the footsteps of the pioneering TCG İstanbul (F515). While initially slated for commissioning in 2023, the entry into service of TCG İstanbul appears to have faced delays.
Turkey naval ambitions extend beyond carriers and frigates, encompassing the acquisition of ocean-going patrol vessels, amphibious ships, mine destroyers, and assault boats. Interestingly, there was no mention of progress on the TF-2000 air defense destroyers in the committee announcements.
In a broader military context, Turkey is strengthening its armed forces across various sectors. Ongoing advancements in unmanned aerial vehicles, radar systems, missile programs, and satellite construction were confirmed. The defense industry will prioritize the development of next-generation assets such as the Kaan multi-role aircraft, Hürkuş training aircraft, and T625 Gökbey helicopters. Furthermore, plans for a future early warning and command aircraft are in the pipeline.
The committee proudly highlighted Turkey achievement of a record-breaking USD 5.5 billion in defense industry exports for 2023, showcasing a remarkable 27% increase from the previous year. This growth expands Turkey export market reach from 176 to 185 countries, solidifying its position as a rising player in the global defense industry.
