Russia and Ukraine Both Deploy Kamikaze Ground Robots in the Conflict Zone

Russia and Ukraine introduce kamikaze ground robots for frontline combat, marking a new phase in the ongoing conflict.

In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both nations are now deploying kamikaze unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to enhance their combat capabilities. These robots are a significant development in modern warfare, capable of both support and direct attack roles.

Russian Deployment

A Russian state firm, High Precision Complexes Holding, has developed two types of UGVs named Depesha and Buggy. Initially designed for logistical tasks like delivering provisions, fuel, and ammunition, these robots also have the capability to carry out medical evacuations. Depesha can handle loads up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds), while Buggy can manage up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds).

More critically, these UGVs can be converted into kamikaze vehicles. They can be loaded with explosives and directed toward enemy positions to destroy personnel and fortifications such as pillboxes and bunkers. According to Russian state-controlled TASS, these kamikaze UGVs were tested during an assault on an enemy stronghold, proving their effectiveness in combat. The tracked Depesha is operated using a joystick and an FPV (first person view) helmet, whereas the wheeled Buggy can be controlled via a joystick and a tablet. These vehicles can also be used to clear obstacles like "dragon teeth" that impede the movement of tanks and armored vehicles.

Ukrainian Response

In response, Ukraine has also started using explosive-laden UGVs. In April, the Ukrainian Armed Forces deployed a UGV to strike Russian trenches. More recently, Ukraine's digital transformation minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, mentioned that a Ukrainian kamikaze UGV successfully destroyed a bridge in the eastern Donetsk region, disrupting Russian logistics.

Ukraine is not stopping there. The country's fundraising platform, United24, announced plans in March to mass-produce hundreds of these ground robots. This move aims to boost Ukraine's technological edge in the conflict, providing a continuous supply of these innovative combat tools.
