PM Modi Strengthens India-Vietnam Relations with New Defence, Security, and Green Economy Initiatives
In a significant development for international relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh have announced a major boost in India-Vietnam ties, focusing on defence, security, and green economy initiatives. This new phase in their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reflects both countries' commitment to accelerating their development goals, aligning with India's 'Viksit Bharat 2047' and Vietnam's 'Vision 2045'.
The announcement was made during a press conference at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, where PM Modi highlighted the expanded dimensions of the bilateral relationship. This strengthening of ties is marked by new plans to enhance cooperation in several key areas.
One of the notable advancements is in defence and security. PM Modi shared that India and Vietnam have inaugurated the Army Software Park in Nha Trang, a step towards bolstering their military cooperation. Additionally, a substantial US$300 million credit line has been agreed upon to support Vietnam's maritime security. The two nations also plan to enhance collaboration on counter-terrorism and cyber security, aiming to address these critical global issues together.
The relationship between India and Vietnam has been growing steadily, with bilateral trade soaring by over 85% in the last decade. This trade surge is complemented by increased cooperation in energy, technology, and development partnerships. PM Modi noted the improvements in connectivity between the two nations, including over 50 direct flights and a rise in tourism. The introduction of e-visas has also facilitated smoother travel for people between the countries.
Cultural and historical ties also play a significant role in this partnership. PM Modi mentioned the extensive restoration work carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India at the My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO heritage site in Vietnam. He emphasized the shared Buddhist heritage, inviting Vietnamese citizens to explore India’s Buddhist circuit and encouraging their youth to benefit from institutions like Nalanda University.
Vietnam's role in India's 'Act East' policy and the Indo-Pacific vision remains pivotal. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region, rejecting expansionism in favor of cooperation based on rules and mutual respect. The agreement also includes digital payment connectivity between their central banks, underscoring their intent to integrate their economies further.
Looking ahead, the two countries plan to focus on the green economy and emerging technologies. They agreed to expedite the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement to unlock further trade potential. There will also be efforts to connect private sectors, small and medium enterprises, and startups from both nations to foster innovation and growth.
Earlier in the day, Vietnamese PM Pham Minh Chinh was ceremoniously welcomed at Rashtrapati Bhavan and visited Raj Ghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, reflecting the deepening of bilateral relations rooted in respect and shared values.
