Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera Takes Command as New DG of Assam Rifles

Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera has officially taken the reins as the new Director General of the Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force renowned as the "Sentinels" of India's northeastern region. His assumption of command marks a significant moment for the force, as he steps into the shoes of Lt Gen PC Nair, who retired after an impressive four decades of service.

Lt Gen Lakhera brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the northeastern region, having been commissioned into the 4 Sikh Light Infantry of the Indian Army on June 9, 1990. Over the years, he has held various command and staff appointments, showcasing his versatility and dedication.

An alumnus of several prestigious military institutions, Lt Gen Lakhera's educational background is as distinguished as his career. He is a postgraduate of the Defence Service Staff College in Wellington and has completed the Higher Defence Management Course at the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad. His academic journey also includes the esteemed National Defence Course at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London. Additionally, he holds an MSc from Madras University, an MA from King's College, London, and a Masters in Management Studies from Osmania University.

Before assuming his new role, Lt Gen Lakhera served as the Additional Director General of Military Operations, where he handled critical aspects of information warfare. His extensive experience in planning and executing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the northeastern region, makes him well-suited for his new responsibilities.

Lt Gen Lakhera's exemplary service has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Sena Medal, the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card, and two Army Commander Commendation Cards.

As the new Director General of the Assam Rifles, Lt Gen Lakhera's leadership and expertise are expected to guide the force through the complex security landscape of the northeastern region, ensuring stability and peace in an area of strategic importance to India.
