Hanwha Ocean Secures $845 Million Contract for Cutting-Edge Submarine with South Korea DAPA

Defense News ,South Korea :- Hanwha Ocean has clinched a substantial contract worth USD 845 million with South Korea Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), paving the way for the construction of an advanced 3,600-ton attack submarine for the Republic of Korea Navy.

This significant contract marks Hanwha Ocean foray into submarine construction, as the shipbuilder takes on the development of the third and final vessel under the Changbogo-III Batch-II program. The company commenced the construction of the initial two Changbogo-III class submarines in 2021, shortly after joining the Hanwha Group in April of the same year.

The completion of the submarine construction is slated for 2029, followed by an extensive two-year testing phase. The Republic of Korea Navy is expected to deploy this state-of-the-art submarine by 2031, as per DAPAs announcement.

The Batch-II submarines signify a notable upgrade in size and capabilities compared to the existing 3,000-ton class vessels, such as the Dosan Ahn Chang-ho and ROKS Ahn Mu. A key feature of these submarines is the incorporation of an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system and lithium-ion batteries, enhancing underwater operation duration while significantly reducing propulsion noise. This technological advancement positions the Batch-II submarines as a new standard in diesel-electric submarine technology.

Furthermore, the submarines will be equipped with an advanced combat system that includes the latest sonar technology. This enhancement will bolster their detection and targeting capabilities, significantly strengthening the Republic of Korea Navy maritime defense capabilities. Hanwha Ocean participation in this high-profile project underscores its growing prominence in the naval defense industry and its dedication to advancing South Korea maritime defense technology.
